The contemplative track finds Gates pondering whether God is an ordinary man. “What if God is one of us / Just a thug like one of us / Getting in out the mud like one of us / Making calls to the plug like one of us,” he croons on the hook.
In light of his new record, Gates’s wife, Dreka Gates, urged fans to remain patient on Instagram while her husband continues to serve his time in jail. “You all KNOW that Kevin and I have always preferred to avoid statements to the media,” she wrote. “We speak directly to you guys and prefer to let the music speak for itself. Although Kevin is not a free man yet, he will be soon! In the meantime, I am SO excited to share this song from HIM to you all! He done been to hell and back, He done been to jail and back… To listen to #whatif check out link in my bio and at @iamkevingates.”
Last month, Gates was scheduled to get out of prison after serving six months for a battery charge stemming from an incident in 2015. During a performance in Florida, Gates allegedly kicked a female fan in the chest. He was then found guilty and was sentenced to 180 days in jail. After his sentence concluded last month, an outstanding weapons-related warrant was reportedly found in his files, forcing him to return to jail. A release date for Gates has not been announced.
